Infared Remote and Receiver

The remote is another optional device. Almost every button on the remote has a function and the numbers on the remote work much like the keypad. The key difference is that the remote is wireless and on the serial port, rather than wired to the keyboard port. In the software section you will see how you can set it up to use any remote control you have. I have had my unit working with video camera remotes, TV remotes, CD player remotes, universal remotes, VCR remotes, and stereo receiver remotes.

If you want to be able to play music from a distance (for all you mobile DJ's out there) you can set up your remote and receiver with a radio link for less than $100. This device connects on the front of your remote control and the front of the IR receiver and will let you be up to 500 feet away from the MP3 player with your play list controlling everything. One example would be walking around taking requests for the next song, many possibilities here.

How it works.

The IR receiver costs $35 (shipped to your door) and connects to the computer using the serial port. It is built into a nice small black box with a connection for a serial cable on the back

For my installation I simply found a panel in my car with nothing behind it, popped out the panel, made a hole in it, and put the IR receiver behind it. By doing this hardly anyone in the car notices it, so all you have is your remote control. A picture of this can be seen below.
